Sunday Scribblings: My shoes

Shoe

This drawing is available to be played with at the Camel Exchange where anyone can join in with the collaborative doodles.

Sunday Scribblings : My Shoes

My shoes, my shoes I don't know what to do... I try to draw a boot and out of the paper pops a bird...

I was recently asked if I'd worn Doc Marten's when Jim and I got married in 2000... and all because I had, perhaps somewhat unusually, decided to take the photos myself... who needs a photographer to order you about at your own wedding!

My shoes, my shoes I know what I'll do... I'll write about my favourite ever pair of shoes.

But I don't have a favourite pair.

Why is that, do you have lots?

No, I don't particularly like shoes at all.

Isn't that unusual?

What do you mean, am I somehow not a real woman because I don't actually have a million, zillion pairs of beautiful shoes?

No, no of course I didn't mean that, at least I didn't mean you to mean that...

Okay, when I was little my mother always bought me sensible shoes. I had broad feet and it was hard to find any let alone pretty ones. I got teased in the playground for wearing decent shoes that were so unlike everyone elses. And as my feet grew to be longer than her's my mother called me "L-shaped", ignoring that I was already taller than her too. I don't have good associations with shoes.

Are you sure you didn't wear Doc Marten's to your wedding?

Yes of course I am. I've had one pair, a flowery pair, and I couldn't get comfortable in them no matter what I wore between me and them. I gave them to a charity shop.

Ah so is comfort the issue?

Yes of course. Who would want to wear shoes that felt unpleasant?

Aha... I see your mother was successful then.

What do you mean?

Well you are more interested now in how they feel than how they look? And you think that is normal.

Well yes.

But is it?

delightful ramblings! the key is to find fabulous shoes that are ALSO comfortable. But I must admit, personally, to sacrificing on comfort at times for style and most importantly: height!

Laini - if my knees and feet didn't complain so I'm sure I'd do the same...

Agreed; knees and feet decide what is put on the toes...

Comfort is all that matters to me! I have my fav Doc Martens I wear almost every day! But not to my wedding. I wore some awful, uncomfortable pumps. My friend wore Birkenstocks to her wedding - for real!

fabulous questions and answers! I love the thought of beautiful shoes but I have never had a pair. It really is all about being comfortable. Sigh!

Ascenderrisesabove - I do get to decide the colour but otherwise, yes the decision goes to the body. ;-)

Jennifer - You are lucky that you can find Doc Martens comfortable and your friend that she finds Birkenstocks comfy... at the moment I seem to be stuck with only finding Teva's... and sometimes Ecco.

Megg - Thank you. Sigh....

The older I get, the more I find comfort the key component to shoes! Lots of shoes live in my closet; most of them rarely get to leave, other than for short periods of time at dinner parties. Thanks for your clever post.

Paris Parfait - I got rid of a lot of shoes a year or so ago but for someone who doesn't care for shoes I still seem to have quite a few - most of them are ones that I thought would be comfier than they turned out to be.

Had to laugh when I saw this boot. I just saw it early this morning when I was nosing around checking out blogs. And here it is on the Sunday Scribble. Serendipity.

Annieelf - maybe you spotted at the camel exchange where its waiting for someone to doodle some more with it?

Well, I don't say that anymore either :-)

L-shaped - I love it!

Caroline said...

Lisrobbe - mmm... true...

Susanlavonne - do you think it comes from an increase in self-confidence?

Cheripop - I can smile about it now... :-)

I absolutely love your approach to the subject - and although I still wear shoes on occasion that make me want to cry, I love the freedom you express of CHOOSING comfort in place of fashion. Good girl!

Caroline said...

Rebekah - thanks for the encouragement but I really don't have that much choice - I'm not good with pain!

Comfortable shoes are like old friends..........you can always rely on them. Think of your shoes and think of all the places and experiences they have taken you to.

Caroline said...

Melba thank you for me and from her too!

Davem - I hope you have plenty of comfortable old friends like that too. ;-)

Ally Bean - unfortunately its been true since I was 19... once out of my mother's control I did try other shoes but couldn't walk in them or wear them. So I've been buying for comfort every since.

Janet said...

I buy for comfort, too, and since I hate shoes, I only wear them when I have to.(I will run out to the mailbox on a frosty day without shoes).

Caroline said...

Janet - that's hardy! I used to run barefoot on gravel when I was in my teens but I've softened up as I've got older.
