What is Art?

What is Art? by Caroline in Painter IX.5

I hadn't been expecting to consider such a philosophical question today but that was before I discovered that flickr had flagged my account as safe but also as NIPSA - this meant no-one would ever find my images through a public search because they weren't showing them there - not that I'm expecting flocks of people to find me - but as a great user of searches myself it seemed rather antisocial to not be contributing too.

It seemed to all ride on the fact that I hadn't marked my content as being art when it was, or photos or screenshots when it was those. I don't know when this change came in - completley passed me by! But you can set a default and then change anything that is not standard individually.

So now I know the answer - art is anything that is not a photo and not a screenshot.

Which is a great way of freeing up the inner artist to play with some completely digital dribbles of paint.

Hands up those who thought it was a test for colour blindness?

Can you see the numbers?

:-)

  2. I think I can see some numbers, but I don't want to spoil the fun, so I'll email & see if I'm right!

I love your Art, Caroline. Nipsa'd, indeed! don't let the public miss out, get those photo's categorised! ;)

  4. I think I see A number - but lovely art though it is, my eyes won't let me look at it any longer to find anymore - will you fill us in later?

  5. maybe it's got too big for its own ideals has flickr. there was a time when they only tolerated non-photographic input but I guess the numbers got too many for them to do much about it.

no i don't see any numbers, caroline, but it looks good nevertheless. :o)

  6. love your bright cheerful blast of happiness on this cold, still-dark morning. Wind is howling outside, feeling vague, sipping coffee and waking up - and then I see your - ART. WOW. Instant smile............

  7. Jo - glad you liked the brightness! No numbers?

Suzie - yes it was annoying - especially as it took me a while to work out how to sort myself out... all done now though, and no longer NIPSA.

Andrea - is that another plug for your cafe press t shirts?

Tinker - sorry that it was too bright for you!

Ian - well its not feeling very art friendly at the moment...

Hayden - glad it added a splash of colour to your life. Thank you.

And right now I confess - there are no numbers.

  9. I came a cropper with that right from the start - I posted up one illustration, and then forgot to get around to anything else for a couple of months, by which time flickr had pigeonholed me as non-photograph non-searchable felon! I then posted a load of photos and emailed them to get it changed, and er I never checked whether it had or not...

I thought I saw 23, but apparently not?

  10. JN - flickr is funny - what I haven't figured yet is how altered a photo has to be to stop counting as just a slightly touched up photo to a full-blown illustration.

You may well have seen 23 - its just I didn't put it there.
