Illustration Friday - Insect

Illustration Friday - insect

Photo manipulated in Painter IX. With added mandala - did I make it too subtle?

What first came to your mind with the word insect?

Jim immediately said: "Tortoise is an insect!"

Refering to:

"Cats is 'dogs', and rabbits is 'dogs', and so's Parrats, but this 'ere 'Tortis' is a insect..." Punch 1869 (click on link to see the original cartoon)

Update: A collaborative insect has appeared over at The Camel Exhange

  1. I clearly did make the mandala a bit too subtle...

  2. Okay, I don't feel quite so colour blind any more, because I'd never have seen it if you hadn't told us it was there.

  3. Nicely done, sadly this kind of insekt always reminds me of the evil and bad.

"Maybe because of those pshyco movies, that I never se any more"

  4. I love what you are doing with your Painter! - had the same bug in mind too, but you beat me to it and as I am 'on the fly' today may not be able to post until later
    :-))

  5. Kyknoord - sorry - I did try less subtle and it didn't work...

Zordis - I can understand that - films have a lot to answer for!

Marie - thank you - will see you later then!

  7. amazing how you gave a fly beauty and intrigue!

  8. Hm, I can't see the mandala, but I agree with Valgalart. Beauty and intrigue. To a fly of all things.

  9. looks like it's ready to attack!

  10. I had to go back and look for the mandela... a new perspective of the fly.
    Thanks!

  11. This scares me, but hey its art! ;) I "faked" my way through this weeks topic. Great job on tackling this one!

  12. A cellophane fly! I want one, too. I like the mandala -- thanks for alerting us!

  13. This is really, really, really, really cool :-) But I don't see the mandala.

  16. Zann - thank you - hope you do feel like joining in at the Camel Exchange - its fun!

Valgalart - thank you. Maybe hiding the mandala helped... I hadn't thought of that at the time...

    GG - odd isn't it?

Melba - thanks - the energy of the mandala seems to be getting through anyway ;-) (If anything comes to me about what might be good for the conference I'll let you know...)

    Isay - not you though!

Joy Eliz - that's a great compliment thankyou!

    Janet - thanks!

Andrea - faking is fine when the topic is tough.

Andrea - glad you saw it!

Nan - thank you - its hard to see, but it is there, really.

Merlinprincesse - was it you who said, as a joke over at the unknown's, that a fly was your power animal?

Unknown - make's your drawing of the Bush Fly all the more remarkable!

  17. This makes me think of an insect captured in amber! There's a real fossilized, marble look to the background - such a cool effect. Is the madala on its back? Very nice!

  18. Tasty colours and I like see through wings a lot.

  19. Oh, super cool! The wings are awesome! Brandi

  20. Flies are disgsting and fascinating at the same time....this is definitely all of the latter.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Carla - I love the idea of the amber - makes it a prehistoric fly!

Katili - thank you though I'd rather not eat him ;-)

Brandi - thanks - it was actually quite cold how could you tell ;-)

Detlef - thank you - glad there is something other than disgusting about it!

  22. Great job. This reminds me of the movie The Ring.

  23. Cool work...is it a tibetan style SAND mandala you talk about?
    :)
    PS funny link...

  24. The fly's head and body make up one fly that becomes a much bigger fly! And if you stare at the area I'm talking about long enough to create a 3D effect, you can see a black and white sea snail shell.

Flies are rather disgusting but they can be very beautiful. Unlike cockroaches that are hardly much more than disgusting.

  25. This fly looks lightly coated with a sugar frosting, so I would be tempted to eat it. Cool link re Punch cartoon too. ..:::)

  26. Very nice and interesting effect to an otherwise annoying little insect!!

  27. One insect I cannot stand is a fly!! However...while looking at your little bugger...it didn't seem to bother me as much! Very nice!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Tony - I've not seen the ring - but if this reminds you of it maybe that's a good reason to avoid it still ;-)

    Aynaku - of course!

Alexa Brett - thank you - I'm glad it works for you.

Reluctant Nomad - I've tried but cannot see the snail...

Modroom - a sugar coated fly - is that your favourite snack? Reminds me of my father eating "squashed fly biscuits" - somehow now I'm grown I suspect they weren't flies at all ;-)

Creative Kismet - thank you - it was a challenge to work with a fly...

    Txartcgal - thanks that's a great compliment!

  29. You've made this fly nearly elegant! I love the texture of this image!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Thanks Roz - I did have to work to put some texture in so I'm glad its appreciated!

  31. This is quite sharp! I automatically thought of insects that fly when I saw this weeks theme.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Perhaps snail is the wrong word to have used - I was referring to a shellfish that is a type of a snail but looks more like a winkle, I think it's called. Circular at the base, rising to a sort of sharp apex with marks in the shell that look a bit like plates (no the dinner table variety).

    I don't think I'm explaining myself properly.

  33. The flies are back soon...
    Great Illo.Weel done!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Oh, I've never seen such a beautiful insect

    ReplyDelete
  35. reluctant Nomad - I've still not managed to see what you describe - which annoys me as I like to be able to see things! But sorry I don't think its going to come through...

    Marc - thanks!

Zinkibaru - thank you very much!
